Divine Intervention

Actors & Actresses:
          Elia Suleiman

Evaluation: ****
Analysis: This film is extremely complex, but also extremely powerful.  It examines the Israeli/Palestinian conflict from the perspective of an Israeli who loves the Palestinians.  It offers images of a land where goodwill has been assaulted and where only the three monotheistic religions can establish a lasting peace.

Recommended for
mature, thoughtful adults, particularly those interested in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

Analysis: “What if Jesus’ body is still in the grave?”  This question drives this film and provides characters with plausible reactions to that imaginary scenario.  This film is a very good discussion starter for people desiring to think seriously about the resurrection of Christ.
Recommended for older teens (some romance and action) and adults.

Analysis: This film, set in the German occupied British Channel Islands immediately after WW II, examines issues of spiritual maturation.  Kidman’s character moves from a childish faith which nurtures a false certainty about issues of faith.  While viewing this film, the Christian viewer is invited to reflect on the nature of faith and whether the acceptance of ambiguity and uncertainty mark the maturation of faith.

Recommended for young adults, particularly those interested in issues of cognitive and spiritual development.

Analysis: This film, set in the Balkans during the wars of the late 1990s, is an extremely  disturbing “Christ” film.  It portrays the horrors of humanity’s inhumanity to humanity and the hatred that human beings are able to inflict upon one another.  Yet, in the midst of this violence and horrors of war, God offers the hope of salvation from violence.  The mature Christian viewer should reflect upon the key question: “Who is the savior in this film and how does the savior brings salvation?”
Recommended for
mature adults only, but highly recommended as a powerful Christian anti-war film.

Analysis: This film, based upon Sinclair Lewis’ award winning novel, is set in the context of prohibition era revivalism.  Lancaster’s acting won him an Oscar for the lead character, a morally flawed preacher.  The film provides a powerful portrayal of how ignorance and fanaticism can be exploited by the unscrupulous for their own gain.
Recommended for
persons who wish to reflect upon the dangers of an excessive emphasis upon religious experience at the expense of personal reflection.

         Actors & Actresses:
     Leonardo DiCaprio (more Leonardo DiCaprio)
     Kate Winslet (more Kate Winslet)

Evaluation: ***

Analysis: This film, winner of the Oscars for best director and best film, is set in the context of great ship’s sinking in 1912.  From a Christian perspective the film is a classic “Christ” film.  Winselt’s character claims that in giving his life for her, DiCaprio’s character has saved her in every way that a person can be saved.  This “salvation” comes through a little steamy sex in the back seat of an antique car.  Although this sexual encounter is more suggestive than graphic (it’s a PG-13 film), the underlying notion of salvation through sexual love outside of marriage is deeply sub-Christian.  This film offers parents of older teens an opportunity to contrast the film’s view of sexuality with a more Christian understanding of salvation and sexuality.  This PG-13 film also offers a good opportunity to think about a definition of pornography.
Recommended for persons who wish to think critically about the romance genre.

Analysis: This classic comedy was extremely bold declaration of the dangers of hate and racism in the context of Hitler’s pre-war popularity.  From a Christian perspective the film draws upon the themes of early twentieth century liberal Protestantism to denounce the rising threat of Hilter, Nazism and racism.
Recommended for
persons who possess mature historical consciousness and who can see passed the antiquated production techniques to the timeless values of the film.  (Keep an eye for frequent Freudian humor.)

Analysis: This hilarious comedy parallels the account of Homer’s Odessy and traces the spiritual journey of three escaped convicts in the 1930s South.   The sound track is deeply fun-loving and has much to offer.  From a Christian perspective the movie has two intriguing themes: the hubris of Clooney’s character who finally experiences baptism as the symbols of his pride are washed away in the closing flood and the inadequacy of reductionistic materialism as a philosophy of life.  (Be sure to reflect about significance of the “cow on the roof” for Clooney’s character.)
Recommended for
persons who enjoy a good comedy with a deeper meaning.

Actors & Actresses:

Evaluation: ***
Analysis:  The Harry Potter, besides being one of the most profitable series in history, offers delightful children’s fantasies.  Many Christian critics have castigated the series as “Satanic,” “demonic,” or “new age.”  In reality, the series is none of these things.  It is fantasy.  On a religious level, in many ways, it represents a post-Christian world view with humanity representing the highest personal forces in the universal.  It does assume powers beyond humanity, but these powers are all impersonal (remember that Satan and demons make no appearance in this series).  As the series develops, it is beginning to offer an interesting analysis of the developmental progress from pre-teen through late teen years.

Recommended for children and their parents.

Analysis: This post-apocalyptic fantasy contains no specifically religious content, but it can easily be viewed as a film about a prophet who brings a message of hope from the world outside of our normal experience (in other words, the word of God).  A very interesting film.Recommended for adults with a well-developed attention span.

Analysis: This film, which contains several sexually provocative scenes, is a marvelous examination of sexuality and sexual promiscuity.  The film leads its central character, David (Cruise), through a journey of self-exploration and helps him to see himself for the rogue that he is.  The only cure for his woman abusing behavior is explicitly Christian, death and resurrection.

Recommended for theologically sophisticated late teen and adult viewers who can discern the deep criticism of the exploitive sexuality it presents throughout much of the film.

Analysis: As a drama and romance, this film isn’t bad, but as a metaphorically film about baptism, it is a gem.  Carey’s character undergoes a symbolic baptism when his car falls off a bridge into a river.  He then assumes a new identity.  This new identity is given to him by the death of a WW II war hero.  The parallels between this new identity and the Christian’s new identity in Christ are transparent.

Recommended for most teens and adults.

Analysis: This tale of a man wrongly convicted for murder is a classic story of sin and redemption.  Andy (Robbins) works through what it means to experience injustice, to discover one’s one guilt, and to find redemption.  The tale is deeply moving, although disturbing at points (including implied homosexual rape), and offers two metaphorical baptisms (when Andy arrives in prison and when escapes through a sewage pipe).

Recommended for adults and late teens.

Analysis: This “coming of age” story is set in the American south in the 1930s and 40s.  It illustrates how a young boy comes to reject the popular religiosity of his environment and eventually engages in a metaphorical slaying of God in his life.  The journey he travels (note the frequency of trains in the movie), although a moving away from faith, will be recognizable to many mature Christian viewers.  This movie may be helpful in reflecting upon why some people are unable to believe.  It has the added advantage of very impressive cinemagraphy.

Recommended for mature young people and adults.

Analysis: This character study of a morally flawed southern evangelist investigates how a person could be deeply committed to the Christian gospel and yet remain morally suspect.  The story is well told and rich with symbolism (note how the “apostle’s” advisors are all physically incomplete, missing a leg or fingers, or suffering from heart disease and how the “apostle” always returns to his childhood experiences when challenged with emotional trying events).  A great story!

Recommended for those who to explore issues of moral development.

Analysis: This “Christ film” portrays a violent Christ figure, who eventually dies for his people, Scots suffering Middle Ages British oppression.  The film has been widely hailed in Christian circles for its explicit Christological imagery in the death scene of its hero (he is spread out in crucifix shape).  The film fails to move me because it portrays a Christ figure who dies involuntarily—and only after violent overthrow of the oppressor has failed.

Recommended for action lovers.

Analysis: This romantic tale about an indulgent connoisseur of chocolate who brings life to a small, religiously conservative town in France portrays the dangers of both religious life without passion and secular life without commitments.  It teaches that spiritual life and death take diverse forms.

Recommended for thoughtful adults.

Evaluation: ***
Analysis: This classic Andrew Lloyd Weber musical investigates the life of Jesus from the perspective of a curious 1970s era hippie.  In contrast to most “Jesus” films, this movie assumes the stance of an interested, but uncommitted, onlooker to the events of Jesus’ life.  (Thus, this story ends without passing judgment on the resurrection of Jesus.)

Recommended for mature viewers who are interested in considering the story of Jesus from alternative perspectives.

Actors & Actresses:

Evaluation: ***
Analysis: This story reflects the Monty Python variety of humor.  For persons who are able to laugh at sometimes irreverent humor, this account will be delightful.  The entire tale is a spoof in which “Brian” is confused with Jesus throughout his life.

Recommended for mature teens and adults seeking humor.

Evaluation: ****
Analysis: This film offers a fictionalized account of the “Scopes Monkey Trial” in which John T. Scopes was tried for teaching evolution in Dayton, TN after the state legislature had outlawed the teaching of evolution.  The image of Christian believers is somewhat unsympathetic, but the warnings about fear, bigotry and anti-intellectualism remain poignant.  (Be sure to view the original.  The 1999 remake directed by Daniel Petrie lacks the power of the original.)

Recommended for scientifically literate adults and teens.

Analysis: This “Christ film,” unlike most films in this genre, presents a Christ figure who seeks to end violence and hatred and who dies as an innocent victim of senseless violence.  The Christ-figure, as a very young boy, is essentially non-sexual, but other characters in the story exhibit inappropriate sexuality (but the film is not sexually provocative).  A real tear-jerker.

Recommended for teens and adults.

 Evaluation: ****
Analysis: This film, the story of a perfectly craft 17th century violin and how it affects the lives of its owners over the course of four centuries, is complex and open to multiple interpretations.  For viewers seeking a thought-provoking movie, this movie will meet that need.  Without prematurely divulging the plot, I would encourage the viewer to consider whether the violin calls out the best, most sacrificial impulses in its owners, or if it brings out the most selfish, destructive impulses in its owners.

Recommended for adults; subtitles and the lack of action will discourage action hungry viewers.
