Divine Intervention

Actors & Actresses:
          Elia Suleiman

Evaluation: ****
Analysis: This film is extremely complex, but also extremely powerful.  It examines the Israeli/Palestinian conflict from the perspective of an Israeli who loves the Palestinians.  It offers images of a land where goodwill has been assaulted and where only the three monotheistic religions can establish a lasting peace.

Recommended for
mature, thoughtful adults, particularly those interested in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

Analysis: “What if Jesus’ body is still in the grave?”  This question drives this film and provides characters with plausible reactions to that imaginary scenario.  This film is a very good discussion starter for people desiring to think seriously about the resurrection of Christ.
Recommended for older teens (some romance and action) and adults.

Analysis: This film, set in the German occupied British Channel Islands immediately after WW II, examines issues of spiritual maturation.  Kidman’s character moves from a childish faith which nurtures a false certainty about issues of faith.  While viewing this film, the Christian viewer is invited to reflect on the nature of faith and whether the acceptance of ambiguity and uncertainty mark the maturation of faith.

Recommended for young adults, particularly those interested in issues of cognitive and spiritual development.

Analysis: This film, set in the Balkans during the wars of the late 1990s, is an extremely  disturbing “Christ” film.  It portrays the horrors of humanity’s inhumanity to humanity and the hatred that human beings are able to inflict upon one another.  Yet, in the midst of this violence and horrors of war, God offers the hope of salvation from violence.  The mature Christian viewer should reflect upon the key question: “Who is the savior in this film and how does the savior brings salvation?”
Recommended for
mature adults only, but highly recommended as a powerful Christian anti-war film.

Analysis: This film, based upon Sinclair Lewis’ award winning novel, is set in the context of prohibition era revivalism.  Lancaster’s acting won him an Oscar for the lead character, a morally flawed preacher.  The film provides a powerful portrayal of how ignorance and fanaticism can be exploited by the unscrupulous for their own gain.
Recommended for
persons who wish to reflect upon the dangers of an excessive emphasis upon religious experience at the expense of personal reflection.

         Actors & Actresses:
     Leonardo DiCaprio (more Leonardo DiCaprio)
     Kate Winslet (more Kate Winslet)

Evaluation: ***

Analysis: This film, winner of the Oscars for best director and best film, is set in the context of great ship’s sinking in 1912.  From a Christian perspective the film is a classic “Christ” film.  Winselt’s character claims that in giving his life for her, DiCaprio’s character has saved her in every way that a person can be saved.  This “salvation” comes through a little steamy sex in the back seat of an antique car.  Although this sexual encounter is more suggestive than graphic (it’s a PG-13 film), the underlying notion of salvation through sexual love outside of marriage is deeply sub-Christian.  This film offers parents of older teens an opportunity to contrast the film’s view of sexuality with a more Christian understanding of salvation and sexuality.  This PG-13 film also offers a good opportunity to think about a definition of pornography.
Recommended for persons who wish to think critically about the romance genre.

Analysis: This classic comedy was extremely bold declaration of the dangers of hate and racism in the context of Hitler’s pre-war popularity.  From a Christian perspective the film draws upon the themes of early twentieth century liberal Protestantism to denounce the rising threat of Hilter, Nazism and racism.
Recommended for
persons who possess mature historical consciousness and who can see passed the antiquated production techniques to the timeless values of the film.  (Keep an eye for frequent Freudian humor.)

Analysis: This hilarious comedy parallels the account of Homer’s Odessy and traces the spiritual journey of three escaped convicts in the 1930s South.   The sound track is deeply fun-loving and has much to offer.  From a Christian perspective the movie has two intriguing themes: the hubris of Clooney’s character who finally experiences baptism as the symbols of his pride are washed away in the closing flood and the inadequacy of reductionistic materialism as a philosophy of life.  (Be sure to reflect about significance of the “cow on the roof” for Clooney’s character.)
Recommended for
persons who enjoy a good comedy with a deeper meaning.

Actors & Actresses:

Evaluation: ***
Analysis:  The Harry Potter, besides being one of the most profitable series in history, offers delightful children’s fantasies.  Many Christian critics have castigated the series as “Satanic,” “demonic,” or “new age.”  In reality, the series is none of these things.  It is fantasy.  On a religious level, in many ways, it represents a post-Christian world view with humanity representing the highest personal forces in the universal.  It does assume powers beyond humanity, but these powers are all impersonal (remember that Satan and demons make no appearance in this series).  As the series develops, it is beginning to offer an interesting analysis of the developmental progress from pre-teen through late teen years.

Recommended for children and their parents.

Analysis: This post-apocalyptic fantasy contains no specifically religious content, but it can easily be viewed as a film about a prophet who brings a message of hope from the world outside of our normal experience (in other words, the word of God).  A very interesting film.Recommended for adults with a well-developed attention span.

Analysis: This film, which contains several sexually provocative scenes, is a marvelous examination of sexuality and sexual promiscuity.  The film leads its central character, David (Cruise), through a journey of self-exploration and helps him to see himself for the rogue that he is.  The only cure for his woman abusing behavior is explicitly Christian, death and resurrection.

Recommended for theologically sophisticated late teen and adult viewers who can discern the deep criticism of the exploitive sexuality it presents throughout much of the film.

Analysis: As a drama and romance, this film isn’t bad, but as a metaphorically film about baptism, it is a gem.  Carey’s character undergoes a symbolic baptism when his car falls off a bridge into a river.  He then assumes a new identity.  This new identity is given to him by the death of a WW II war hero.  The parallels between this new identity and the Christian’s new identity in Christ are transparent.

Recommended for most teens and adults.

Analysis: This tale of a man wrongly convicted for murder is a classic story of sin and redemption.  Andy (Robbins) works through what it means to experience injustice, to discover one’s one guilt, and to find redemption.  The tale is deeply moving, although disturbing at points (including implied homosexual rape), and offers two metaphorical baptisms (when Andy arrives in prison and when escapes through a sewage pipe).

Recommended for adults and late teens.

Analysis: This “coming of age” story is set in the American south in the 1930s and 40s.  It illustrates how a young boy comes to reject the popular religiosity of his environment and eventually engages in a metaphorical slaying of God in his life.  The journey he travels (note the frequency of trains in the movie), although a moving away from faith, will be recognizable to many mature Christian viewers.  This movie may be helpful in reflecting upon why some people are unable to believe.  It has the added advantage of very impressive cinemagraphy.

Recommended for mature young people and adults.

Analysis: This character study of a morally flawed southern evangelist investigates how a person could be deeply committed to the Christian gospel and yet remain morally suspect.  The story is well told and rich with symbolism (note how the “apostle’s” advisors are all physically incomplete, missing a leg or fingers, or suffering from heart disease and how the “apostle” always returns to his childhood experiences when challenged with emotional trying events).  A great story!

Recommended for those who to explore issues of moral development.

Analysis: This “Christ film” portrays a violent Christ figure, who eventually dies for his people, Scots suffering Middle Ages British oppression.  The film has been widely hailed in Christian circles for its explicit Christological imagery in the death scene of its hero (he is spread out in crucifix shape).  The film fails to move me because it portrays a Christ figure who dies involuntarily—and only after violent overthrow of the oppressor has failed.

Recommended for action lovers.

Analysis: This classic Andrew Lloyd Weber musical investigates the life of Jesus from the perspective of a curious 1970s era hippie.  In contrast to most “Jesus” films, this movie assumes the stance of an interested, but uncommitted, onlooker to the events of Jesus’ life.  (Thus, this story ends without passing judgment on the resurrection of Jesus.)

Analysis: This film offers a fictionalized account of the “Scopes Monkey Trial” in which John T. Scopes was tried for teaching evolution in Dayton, TN after the state legislature had outlawed the teaching of evolution.  The image of Christian believers is somewhat unsympathetic, but the warnings about fear, bigotry and anti-intellectualism remain poignant.  (Be sure to view the original.  The 1999 remake directed by Daniel Petrie lacks the power of the original.)

Analysis: This “Christ film,” unlike most films in this genre, presents a Christ figure who seeks to end violence and hatred and who dies as an innocent victim of senseless violence.  The Christ-figure, as a very young boy, is essentially non-sexual, but other characters in the story exhibit inappropriate sexuality (but the film is not sexually provocative).  A real tear-jerker.

Analysis: This film, the story of a perfectly craft 17th century violin and how it affects the lives of its owners over the course of four centuries, is complex and open to multiple interpretations.  For viewers seeking a thought-provoking movie, this movie will meet that need.  Without prematurely divulging the plot, I would encourage the viewer to consider whether the violin calls out the best, most sacrificial impulses in its owners, or if it brings out the most selfish, destructive impulses in its owners.

Recommended for adults; subtitles and the lack of action will discourage action hungry viewers.

Analysis: This highly sexual film investigates the mind of a middle-aged man who seeks to sexually exploit his daughter’s teenage friend.  In spite of this plot, the character transformation that the lead character (Kevin Spacey) undergoes is essentially a conversion from a deeply sub-Christian approach to human sexuality to an essentially Christian view of human sexuality.

Analysis: This account of Jesus’ life is the most-widely viewed film in the history.  Although largely based on the Gospel of Luke, this film tells the story of Jesus from a consciously Evangelical perspective.  The film’s production techniques are seriously dated and amateurish.  On a theological level, the film radically rearranges Luke’s Gospel in order to advances its Evangelical theological perspective.

Analysis: This film reflects many of the values associated with Mel Gibson films.  Gibson’s character is reluctant to engage in the Revolutionary War, but becomes a ferocious American patriot after his young son is murdered by a corrupt British officer.  The characterization is simple and formulaic, but the movie offers a helpful opportunity to consider the relationship between Christian faith and patriotism.  The film has Gibson recruiting for the Revolution in a church where a few people resist joining the war effort on pragmatic grounds, but no one raises serious questions about the justice of the war.  Religion in film, like many of Gibson’s films, serves the national interests.

Analysis: This extremely dark and complex film follows an ambulance driver as he tries to “save” the hapless inhabitants of New York City.  The story is undoubtedly a metaphor for the mission of the church (Scorsese is a Catholic who studied for the priesthood), but its complexity allows for a diversity of interpretations.

Analysis: This humorous film asks the seemingly simple question, “Is there really such a thing as ‘coincidence’?”  The theme could be serious, but the humor overtakes the more serious moments.  Still, the film can be thought-provoking.  Be sure to note the symbolic use of traffic lights.

Actors & Actresses:

Analysis: This film is significant as an example of mainstream Hollywood’s treatment of religion.  Cage’s character is a nominal Catholic who has outgrown the Catholicism of his youth, while Beach’s character practices the religion of his native American heritage.   Both Beach’s religious traditions and the Buddhist traditions of the Pacific islanders with whom the American GIs come into contact are treated with great respect and sensitivity, while Cage’s Catholic traditions are pretty consistently demeaned.  Christianity is subjected to a negative stereotype, while minority religions are presented as admirable.

Analysis: This film reflects many of the values associated with Mel Gibson films.  Gibson’s character is a committed Roman Catholic and a loyal American patriot.  This movie, like many of Gibson’s films, offers a helpful opportunity to consider the relationship between Christian faith and patriotism, particularly in light of the fact that the Vietnam War (in which Gibson’s character is fighting) was moral suspect in light of traditional Catholic teaching on “just war.”

Analysis: This film is a true classic in every sense of the word and is one of the most widely cited examples of the “Christ” film genre.  Nicholson’s character works to free his comrades from the tyranny of a system that dehumanizes them and eventually gives his life for them.  Feminist critics have appropriately criticized the film for making the Christological battle similar to a battle between the sexes (the female nurse represents the domination system and the patients are all male).

Analysis: This film is a simple (simplistic?) "who dun it?" on the surface, but more significant theological themes lurk (largely underdeveloped) just below the surface.  The murder victim is a Christ figure (her killer steals a crucifix from her to make this point even more explicit), but the real theological issue at stake concerns the atonement--or more specifically the violence of the atonement.  Eastwood's character is drawn into the murder investigation when he learns that the donated heart which beats in his chest came from a murder victim.  He then reflects upon how he can enjoy the new life which was given to him by the victimization of an innocent person.  Sound familar?

theologically mature viewers who wish to reflect upon the significance of violence in theories of the atonement.

Analysis: This exceptional film is based upon a comic book series by the same name.  In the screen, however, the film is distinctly theological.  It narrates the story of one who still believes in the mission of the church, but who has lost faith in the "father."  The answer to this situation is, of course, a dying Christ figure (Jennifer Garner).

Analysis: This historical drama is deeply interesting for two reasons.  First, it is played out against the background of the Augustinian/Pelagian conflict within the church--and it makes Pelagius, not Augustine the hero.  This alternative telling of the story is interesting.  Second, it demonstrates how both sets of ideas (Augustinian and Pelagian) could be used to promote violence and abuse; this film demonstrates how truth is found both in the content and use of ideas.

Analysis: This film is a feminist twist on the old shoot 'em up westerns.  The feminist agenda is interesting in itself, but the opening of the film is particularly interesting as a feminist critique of Christianity's tendency to subordinate women.  The four main female characters are being harassed by a mob of self-appointed defenders of morals who are carrying signs denouncing the protagonists' vocation (prostitution).  One of the central themes of the film is how Christianity can hostile toward women.  Rather seeing women like those in this film as victimized by men, some Christians want to all of society's ills on these women.  The film is a good discussion starter for this topic.

Analysis: This gritty crime drama has a classic Christ figure (Sean Penn) who gives his life to save a woman who is trapped in a life dominated by the sin of her family.  The tale is sexist in the sense that a male figure is needed to free a helpless woman from her unwholesome plight, but it is an intense telling of a violent Christ figure (a Christ who commits great violence before himself becoming a willing victim of violence).

Analysis: This film is very important for people who are interested in both the history of film and the role of religion in culture.  Even a cursory viewing of this film should put to rest any naive claims about how hostile the contemporary Hollywood elite are to Christianity.  No major filmmaker or studio would dare to make a film with this film's blatant hostility to Christianity and its mockery of traditional Christian practices and ethics.  Observe especially the mockery of the famed "Last Supper" scene and of the Lord's prayer.  This snapshot of Hollywood's former hostility to Christianity will reveal how timid and fearful contemporary Hollywood has become when it comes to offending Christians--a fear that Hollywood did not possess in the 1969 world of M*A*S*H.

Evaluation: ***
Analysis: This film is a classic form the disco music craze of the 1970s.  However, its significance for considerations of faith and film is the central question which drives the subtext of the film: How do people find meaning after the rejection of traditional Christian faith.  In the film, various forms of self-indulgence (drugs, dance, sex) offer few sources of genuine fulfillment.  The film raises this question (note the prominence of the former priest in the story), but offers few answers.  This film is really a snapshot of the rising (and ultimately empty) secularism of the 1970s with the demise of traditional Christian values.

Recommended for adults (especially those who remember the 70s). 9/12/06

This film is more interesting for its main theme (a mother's imperfect love) than for its bearing on issues of faith.

Analysis: This film, as controversial as it was upon release, is undeniably beautifully made and expertly acted.  The story is more than a boy-meets-girl film turned into a boy-meets-boy film.  The story is powerful and will ring true for viewers old enough to remember the times chronicled in the film (the 1960s, 70s and early 80s).  For theologically engaged viewers, the primary issue of interest is the main characters' relationship to the church.  Each character talks about the church a significant amount even though that line of discourse is ancillary to the film.  These discussions of the church reveal how the church is largely irrelevant to persons with a gay or lesbian sexual orientation.  It provides food for thought.  How can the church initiate meaningful dialogue with such people?

Analysis: This film, the story of a 1950s era effort to evangelize an indigenous tribe in Ecuador, dramatizes the murder of the original missionaries and the eventual forgiveness of those who committed the murder.  This is clearly the best film that I have seen to date in the genre of missionaries tales.  Much of the photography is delightful although some of the lines are predictable almost to the point of corny.  Overall, however, this film gives one hope for its genre.

Analysis: This mega-blockbuster is designed for fun, with little pretense of being a serious film.  However, for those interested in issues of faith and film, this film is illustrative of the current trend among mainstream film to respect minority religions and to ridicule Christianity.  In this film, the only explicitly Christian character is a religious nut who claims that the end (and the second coming of Christ) is imminent in light of the alien's attack on earth.  Meanwhile, the events in the film cause one of the main characters to reconnect with the depth of his neglected Jewish faith.  While respect for Jewish tradition is very good, I am left wondering if respect for the Christian tradition could also be preserved.

Analysis: This biopic about the life of William Wilberforce, the British Christian who led the anti-slavery movement in the 18th century England, focuses upon his life and the personal toll that his role in the abolition of slavery in Britain took on his life.   The life is far better than most explicitly Christian films.  Wilberforce is portrayed with some character weaknesses and not as the plastic figure of many Christian biopics.  The film would be improved by more attention to the voices of the slaves.  The film is strictly the story of the white man who helps to free the slaves--and in that sense, by continuing to silence the slaves, the film still denies the personhood of the slaves.

Analysis: This thoughtful account of a Catholic missionary in 17th century Canada is a beautiful film which reflects on the nature of faith and the conflict that arises when one both loves a people and also desperately desires to change them.  The film is pleasant, but not revelatory.  It offers no easy solutions or simplistic moralizing.... thoughtful, but not stunning.

Analysis: "You can't make a deal with the devil."  That is the simple moral of this funny film as the naive Elliot (Fraser) trades his soul for a series of wishes.  None of his wishes comes true anything like he wanted, but still he's on the hook for his soul--until he is salvaged by his unrelenting kindness.  It's not high drama, but it is funny.

Analysis: This Holocaust film was written and produced in Poland and reflects the experiences of a young Jewish boy who poses as a Christian in order to avoid death.  It's a dark film in some unexpected ways, but prompts one to reflect upon how the language of Christianity is heard from the margins.

 Evaluation: ****
Analysis: I'm a big Stanley Kramer fan.  This director was known for his social conscience films and this is one of his best.  It is a cold war story of the world after a nuclear exchange between the cold war adversaries.  I don't want to spoil the ending, but this film provides an interesting twist on the traditional "war hero meets beautiful girl" theme.  The film stands in the best of the prophetic tradition and calls people to heed the old adage "that is still not too late."  Watch particularly for the role of the Salvation Army in this film.

Analysis: This extremely painful story of clergy sexual abuse of children is chilling.  In one scene, a father asks how a priest could break the wafer of Christ's body and then use those same hands to defile a child.  Definitely not devotional, but powerful.

Analysis: This film is so bad that it is interesting to watch.  The plot is simple.  A 19th century liberal leaning professor of theology is able to go forward in time and see the devastating effects of his liberal theology.  This time travel horrifies him and prompts him to change his teaching.  The interesting part is consider the images of the present corrupt age and the earlier righteous age.  Notice how sexist and racist the contrast is.  This film perfectly illustrates the racist and sexist tendencies of contemporary white, middle-class, politically conservative Evangelicalism.

Analysis: This very dark film with a thoroughly unlikely main character is intriguing. It seems to me that one could interpret either as an assertion of the unrelenting nature of evil, even in the hypocritical church (which finally shows its true identity in the last scene) or as assertion of the church's role as those who will always be called to lay down their lives at the hands of the evil and unrepentant.  A great film for serious reflection.

Analysis: This very un-funny comedy is neither funny nor insightful.  However, it is interesting to watch the film and to reflect upon how these filmmakers (who apparently know nothing about the life of faith) portray the person of faith (disconnected from all reality, piously optimistic at all times and hopelessly dependent on others).  This film provides interesting insight into how the irreligious conceive of holiness--a topic about which the filmmakers are completely ignorant.
