The Traditional Holy Sites
  • The group traveled with Dr. Phillips, beginning in Jordan, then proceeding to the West Bank, and finally entering into Israel proper.

  • These are a few of the sites that we visited.  Many other photos of holy sites are integrated into the class notes for Dr. Phillips’ classes.

Jerash, Site of Jesus’ Baptism, & Mt. Nebo (Jordan)
  • Jerash, in modern day Jordan, is the best preserved Greco-Roman city in the eastern Mediterranean.
  • The city was part of the Decapolis, the ten cities to the east of the Sea of Galilee and the Jordan River, in which Jesus preached.
  • Mt. Nebo is the traditional site from which Moses viewed the promised land.

The Sites in and around Jerusalem
  • The Mount of Olives overlooks the old city of Jerusalem and sits just above the Garden of Gethsemane.
  • The Dominus Flevit marks the spot where Jesus is believed to have lamented over Jerusalem, saying that he would have gathered Jerusalem as a hen gathers her chicks.
  • The church of the agony (the church of all nations) marks where Jesus is believed to have prayed, “Not my will, but thine be done.”
  • The church of the Holy Sepulchre contains the traditional sites of the crucifixion and empty tomb.

Holy Sites in the West Bank
  • The Herodion is a fortress built by Herod the Great as a summer palace.  It was used as a last hold out by Jewish rebels during the second great revolt against Rome (ca. 135 CE).
  • The Church of the Nativity marks the traditional site of the birth of Jesus.
  • St. George’s Monastery is located just outside of Jericho in the Wadi Qelt.
