Active Voice Verbs & Noun Cases
Active Voice Verbs
(1) Transitive Verbs (take a direct object)
E.g., “Joe threw a ball.” (The ball receives the action of the verb.)
(2) Intransitive Verbs (do NOT take a direct object)
E.g., “Jane slept.”
(3) Equative Verbs (equate the subject & predicate)
E.g., “Dr. Williams is a feminist.”
Noun Cases
(1) Nominative Case (Case for subject of all verbs & predicate of equative verbs)
E.g., “Susan studied Greek.”
E.g., “Dale is a genius.”
(2) Genitive Case (Case for possession & object of some prepositions)
E.g., “That is his book.”
E.g., “Harry Potter lives under the staircase.”
(3) Dative Case (Case for indirect object & object of some prepositions)
E.g., “He gave Alicia a kiss.”
E.g., “Jesus walked to Galilee.”
(4) Accusative Case (Case for direct object & object of some prepositions)
E.g., “Jesus healed a blind man.”
E.g., “Jesus walked along the sea.”
Middle Voice Verbs
* The subject of the sentence both performs and receives the action of the
verb.
* The subject and direct object are the same person or thing, but the verb is not equative.
E.g., “Ben dressed himself.”
Passive Voice Verbs
* The subject receives the action of the verb and the actor of the verb is
either not
identified or is identified in a prepositional phrase (“by ….”).
E.g., “The ball was thrown.”
E.g., “The ball was thrown by Shannon.”
