William Jennings Bryan & Evolution

Bryan was a popular lay leader of early 20th century Christianity.  He was an attorney and populist politician, being serving as Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson (until WW I began and Bryan resigned in protest), being elected to Congress, and being nominated for the presidency three times.  Bryan was deeply convinced that teaching evolution contributed to the dehumanization of humanity that made wars--like World War I--possible.  He fought the teaching of evolution on the grounds that it lead to atheism and violence.  He served as a special prosecutor in the "Scopes Monkey Trial."

This excerpt is typically of his writings.
