Athenagoras of Athens |
|
This late second century apologist wrote two documents which survive to the present (On the Resurrection and A Plea for Christians). Both documents are consistent with the late century attempt by many Christian intellectuals to demonstrate the truth and plausibility of the Christian faith in terms attractive to the Greco-Roman elite. It is difficult to know how effective such documents were or even if their purpose was truly apologetics (in the sense of trying to convince those who little previous commitment to the Christian faith) or more properly legitimization (in the sense of trying to shore up the wavering faith of those who were already somewhat committed to the Christian faith). The second purpose is more likely.
